When photographing newborns, safety should always be your top priority. Start by communicating with the parents to understand the baby’s health situation. This step is crucial to avoid using any props or objects that might cause an allergic reaction.

For instance, in 2015, during my first year working as a newborn photographer, I decorated my studio with fragrant flower bouquets for a photo session with a sweet one-month-old baby girl. Excited and eager to capture beautiful moments, I arranged the studio to create a serene and enchanting environment.

However, about 15 minutes into the session, the baby developed red rashes. Alarmed and concerned, her parents and I rushed her to the hospital, where we discovered she was allergic to pollen. Fortunately, after receiving medical attention, the baby was fine, but this incident taught me an invaluable lesson: always check for potential allergens before a photo shoot.

From then on, safety has been my top priority. Here are some four (4) essential safety tips I would like to share:  

1. Find out in advance about the newborn’s health situation:

Always communicate with the parents to understand the baby’s health status. This ensures you are aware of any allergies, medical conditions, or special needs the baby may have.

2. Avoid using tools and objects that cause allergies:.

Be mindful of the items you use during the photo session. For instance, avoid fragrant flowers, certain fabrics, or any props that could potentially trigger an allergic reaction in the baby. 

3. Pay attention to observation:

An assistant is needed to observe and protect the safety of the newborn throughout the session. Having an extra pair of hands helps manage the baby’s needs and swiftly address any emergencies that may arise.  

4. When taking photos from above, wear the camera strap around your neck.

This simple precaution prevents the camera from accidentally falling onto the baby, ensuring the baby’s safety during overhead shots.

By following these safety tips, you can create a secure and comfortable environment for newborn photo sessions. Prioritizing safety not only protects the baby but also provides peace of mind for the parents, allowing for a successful and enjoyable photography experience.

Tip #2: Environment

The environment in newborn photography is crucial because it directly affects the baby’s comfort and safety, which are essential for a successful photo session. Newborns are extremely sensitive to their surroundings; they can easily become distressed if they are too cold, too hot, or placed on uncomfortable surfaces. 

Creating the perfect environment is crucial in newborn photography. The setting not only affects the quality of the photos but also ensures the comfort and safety of the baby. A well-thought-out environment can make the session smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved. 

So, here are three (3) essential tips for creating an ideal environment for newborn photography:

(1) Creating a warm environment:

Ensuring the room is warm and cozy helps the baby stay comfortable and relaxed during the photo session. This can be achieved with space heaters or heating pads, but always monitor the temperature to avoid overheating.

(2) Temperature control and soft surfaces:

Maintaining a consistent temperature is key to keeping the newborn comfortable. Soft, cushioned surfaces provide a safe and cozy spot for the baby to lie on. Use blankets and props that are gentle on the baby’s delicate skin, and always check that they are clean and free of allergens.

(3) Ensuring the space is clean and safe:

Cleanliness is important in newborn photography. The studio should be thoroughly cleaned before each session to eliminate any potential hazards. Keep all small or sharp objects out of reach, and sanitize props and surfaces to ensure a germ-free environment for the baby.

However, if morning sessions are not feasible, early afternoon slots can serve as an alternative, although late afternoon sessions should be avoided to prevent potential baby fatigue.

It’s advisable to schedule the session shortly after a feeding when the baby is likely to be content and perhaps even drift off to sleep. This timing not only increases the likelihood of achieving those adorable sleeping baby shots but also ensures the baby’s comfort throughout the session.

For example, I often capture newborn photos directly in my studio, where I employ various diffusers and modifiers to sculpt the light and create soft, flattering illumination. – Location Setup: Choose a location with a white backdrop to reflect and diffuse light evenly, creating a gentle and pleasing ambiance.

– Avoid Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cast harsh shadows and discomfort newborns. To mitigate this, use sheer curtains, blinds, or white sheets to diffuse and soften the light, ensuring a gentle and comfortable atmosphere for the baby.

2. Additional Lighting

– Continuous Softbox Lights or LED Panels: In situations where natural light is insufficient or unavailable, consider using continuous softbox lights or LED panels. These sources offer consistent and adjustable illumination, enhancing control over the lighting setup.
